Missionaries of Hate

Two years ago, I attended the screening of a documentary entitled ‘Missionaries of Hate’ in Sturm Hall. Part of a larger documentary series called ‘Vanguard’, this 45-minute film focuses on the intense mistreatment and the bleak predicament faced by homosexuals in Uganda. While browsing through the IGLHRC website today in preparation for Wednesday’s class, I read this particular article (http://www.iglhrc.org/cgi-bin/iowa/article/pressroom/pressrelease/1480.html) about the reintroduction of the anti-gay bill in Uganda this year, and it immediately reminded me of the documentary. Apart from exploring the predominant mindset regarding homosexuality in Ugandan society, it also explores the role that American evangelicals, such as Pastor Rick Warren, have played in aggravating this issue.

MOH features a gay Ugandan man by the name of Long Johns and, despite how stirring the film already is, to get the perspective of someone facing such a situation makes it even more so. I think that it is worth a watch.
